Hundreds enjoy return of school sport

Posted: 11th May 2021

Hundreds of young people are enjoying taking part in competitive sport once again.

Mark Hall Academy has launched The Form Games as a way of getting students in all year groups active after the pandemic saw physical lessons banned.

In just two weeks, 500 students competed in inter-form football or netball games during their lunchbreaks.

More than 100 students have also taken to the side-lines to support their classmates from a social distance.

PE teacher Nathan Jackson said: “The Form Games have been a pipe dream of mine for some time now. I set up the Games with the intention of getting students more active, competing with each other and building relationships with their own year group and other year groups.

“It is also a great opportunity for our young leaders to referee and umpire the football and netball games, expanding not only their playing knowledge but their leadership skills.

“It is down to the form group tutors and the students that this has worked so well in its first two weeks. All students who have taken part in the Games have been extremely thankful and have really enjoyed themselves.”

The weekly event sees students compete for a pizza party for their form, medals, reward points and certificates.

The Games will be expanded in future to include other sports, as well as cross-curricular competitions, such as mathletes, science fayres, debates teams and fundraising teams.

Mr Jackson said: “Competition is not just for sport, it is for all to be a part of, and it is something that is deep-rooted with life, so what better than to have something that teaches students to compete fairly from a young age each week.”
